Free Doll Bonnet Sewing Pattern for 14-Inch and 18-Inch Dolls

Today I’m sharing the doll version of my Brim Bonnie sewing pattern! This adorable fabric bonnet is designed for both 14-inch and 18-inch dolls, and the free printable pattern includes both sizes.

This bonnet has a pretty curved brim, a fully lined finish, and ribbon ties that fasten underneath the doll’s chin. It looks so cute with dresses


The sewing method is similar to my porch goose bonnet, but the doll bonnet uses its own pattern pieces and sizes.

Materials and Supplies


You will need:

  • Free doll bonnet sewing pattern

  • Fabric for the outer bonnet

  • Fabric for the lining

  • Ribbon for the ties 12"-15"

  • Coordinating thread

  • Fabric scissors

  • Pins or sewing clips

  • Sewing machine

  • Iron

  • Point-turning tool or chopstick

  • Lighter or fray-prevention product for the ribbon ends




Pattern Pieces

From the outer fabric:

  • Two side panels

  • One middle panel

  • One brim


From the lining fabric:

  • Two side panels

Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions


Step 1: Sew the Side Panels to the Center Panel


With right sides together, pin both side panels to the center panel.

Stitch along the curved seams. Try to keep the edges lined up evenly as you sew around the curves.

Step 2: Clip the Curves


Clip small notches into the curved seam allowance. Be careful not to cut through your stitching.

Clipping the curves helps the bonnet sit smoothly once it is turned and pressed.




Step 3: Attach the Brim




With right sides together, pin the brim to the front edge of the bonnet.

Step 4: Topstitch the Seam Allowance


Fold the seam allowance toward the bottom of the bonnet.

Step 5: Add the Ribbon Ties


Stitch the ribbon to the ends of the bonnet.

Repeat the same steps for the lining. Sew the side panels to the center panel, clip the curves, attach the brim, and topstitch the seam allowance.

Step 7: Join the Outer Bonnet and Lining


Place the outer bonnet and lining right sides together, Pin around the edges.

Step 8: Stitch Around the Bonnet

Step 9: Trim and Clip

Carefully turn the bonnet right side out through the opening.

Cut the ribbon in half to create one tie on each side.

Step 12: Press the Bonnet


Press the bonnet nice and flat.

Edge-stitch all around the bonnet, This closes the turning opening and gives the bonnet a neat finished edge.

And that’s it! Your little bonnet is finished. 🎀





A Cute Bonnet for Every Season


This doll bonnet can be made in so many different colors and styles. Try using:

  • Floral fabric for spring

  • Pastel fabric for Easter

  • Gingham for a country-style bonnet

  • Lace or eyelet fabric for a vintage look

  • Fall prints for autumn

  • Christmas fabric for the holidays


You can also decorate the finished bonnet with lace, bows, tiny flowers, or other small embellishments.
